This action prohibits all motor carriers found to be unfit from operating commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) in interstate commerce. Federal Highway Administration (part of USDOT) issues a "Notice of Proposed Rulemaking; request for comments" regarding "Safety Fitness Procedures". In this notice USDOT is proposing to prohibit all motor carriers that are issued an "unsatisfactory" safety rating from operating in interstate commerce. Motor carriers would have 60 days to correct deficiencies; passenger and hazmat carriers would have 45 days. The proposed regulations would not be applied retroactively.
